What is an Oral Health Therapist and why should I see them?

You may have noticed we recently hired an Oral Health Therapist.

We would like to welcome Hena to the team at JT Dental.

Hena will work alongside Dr Joshua and the team at JT Dental for checkup and clean appointments.

This gives Dr Joshua and out other dentists more time to do treatment for their patients.

What is an Oral Health Therapist?

An Oral Health Therapist works together with the dentist focusing on hygiene and diagnosis of some treatments needed.

Sometimes referred to as an OHT, they can help take the stress off busy dentists appointment books.

An OHT studies for 3 years at university as well as doing placements in various dental surgeries.

They are dual qualified in dental hygiene and therapy.

Why should I see the OHT instead of the dentist?

Seeing the OHT for your clean appointment is recommended because they focus on hygiene appointments.

OHT appointments free up the dentist appointment books so they can focus on treatment for you.

Your OHT regularly communicates with your dentist.

Any treatment that is needed will be booked back with your preferred dentist in a timely manner.

What treatment can the Oral Health Therapist do?

An OHT can do a variety of treatments including:

  • * Check-ups and examinations, oral health instructions and education,
  • * Cleaning of teeth, fluoride treatments,
  • * Fillings for children and adults under 26 years of age,
  • * Fissure sealants, polishing teeth,
  • * Extractions of baby teeth (deciduous teeth)
  • * Diagnosis of treatment needed,
  • * X-rays and referrals as needed.

Some OHT’s have an extended scope where they are able to see patients of all ages.

How often should I visit the OHT?

It is important to visit the OHT every 6 months.

This helps us to detect any caries or “holes” in your teeth.

Detection of caries when they are small is beneficial for both you and the dentist.

Why?

Smaller holes are easier and cheaper to fill.

Smaller holes have less chance of causing you pain.
